Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals

The following opportunities do not require prior attendance at a Volunteer Information Session:

Donation Door Attendant

Activity: Greet and thank donors; assist donors in unloading clothing and household goods from vehicle; provide tax receipts and agency information to donors; and demonstrate outstanding customer service. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Availability: Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm or 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm; Saturday, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

Time Commitment: 3-4 hour minimum

 

Unload Sanitized Mattresses

Activity: Provide assistance at Furniture Bank unloading truck delivery of mattresses after they have been sanitized and bagged. Work occurs on the dock and in warehouse; requires lifting, walking, pushing, and pulling. 

Availability: Wednesdays, 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Time Commitment: 3 hours

 

Furniture Pick Up Assistant

Activity: Strong, willing volunteers are frequently needed to assist with bulk mattress and furniture pick up at Charlotte hotels, universities, and other institutions.

Availability: As needed basis. These pick ups often take place Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 am - 2:30 pm.

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours

 

Free Store Production Assistant 

Activity: Sort and inspect household donations; hang and size clothing donations in the Free Store Production Area and prepare them for placement in the Free Store. May also assist with stocking the Free Store.

Availability: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 am - 11:00 am or 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm. 

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours

 

The following opportunities require a Volunteer Information Session and a 6-month commitment before service begins: 

Administrative Support

Activity: Assist with clerical tasks such as maintaining organization of supply room, laminating and using paper cutter to create name tags, making copies and scanning documents, filing, and conference room set-up and break down as needed.

Availability: Monday to Friday, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. 

Time Commitment: 2-3 hour minimum

 

Benefit Access Counselor

Activity: Assist customers with computer-based tools to identify available services and benefits to help them achieve financial stability.

Availability: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. 

Time Commitment: 3 hour minimum

 

Customer Surveys

Activity: Conduct on-site customer surveys using a tablet after a client has completed their assistance interview or shopping transaction. 

Availability: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. 

Time Commitment: 3 hour minimum

 

Customer Service 

Activity: Assist with intake, checkout, customer relations, and more in the Furniture Bank and Free Store. Bilingual Spanish/English speaking volunteers appreciated. 

Availability: Tuesday to Saturday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. 

Time Commitment: 3 hour minimum

 

Poverty Simulation Assistant

Activity: Support the agency's Poverty Simulation efforts through helping facilitators conduct simulations, reassembling kits after use, and maintaining inventory of supplies.

Availability: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Optional evening/weekend hours.

Time Commitment: 3 hour minimum
